The Rotary Club of Nairobi East has the largest international grant, worth USD 199,501, within the district of Nairobi for their Maasai Water Project.
The project will provide potable water to within two or three kilometers of most of the approximately 46,000 inhabitants of the area.
A partnership of Americans and Kenyans did a survey each of the eight villages to determine the particular approach to be taken. Some of the approaches were
1. New boreholes (3)
2. Reliable power for water pumping (5)
3. New or repaired distribution pipelines
4. New or repaired water storage tanks (4)
In one village, separate boys' and girls' latrine cubicles were to be provided at least 100 feet from water sources with convenient hand washing facilities.
The beneficiaries are the 15,000 to 20,000 inhabitants of the area. The benefits include better health, better education, better economic opportunity, and better quality of life.
The project will contract for technical, management and other services with MEDEC and E.A. Drillcom, Ltd., a Kenyan water well drilling company. The village projects will be prioritized and organized for efficiency of execution. MEDEC will organize villagers to provide labor (sweat equity) for unskilled labor requirements such as digging holes, mixing cement, digging trenches, hauling pipe line, etc. The implementation will occur over approximately one year. Project work will be based out of Kiserian, Kenya. Rotarians from Nairobi East will monitor and support project implementation with periodic visits by D5080 and D5340 Rotarians to Kenya.
