Hare Krishna Temple Food For Life Program.

When I first went to the temple to make the inquiry, the Asian lady in charge was very suspicious. She said they have never received a donation from an African!

On the day I was to join them for the food distribution, she took me round their temple introducing me to different people and explaining their god shrines. She eventually took me to their President who apparently had heard of my contribution and coming. He too, curiously, wanted to know which company I represented, who had sent me; I had neither. He invited me to return for one of their celebrations. Gave me a book on the Hindu principals. Called in a lady who would be my mentor/friend. I was like loyalty! I kept telling them please make sure the food distribution van going to the slums does not leave me. I was told; they all know you are with the president so they cant leave. I eventually said my good byes with Hare Krishna (which is the custom greeting).

Down stairs we met Vishaka who was to accompany me, just before we left her sister happen to be coming to the temple, and she decided to join us.
Their father started the Food for Life project cycling fund raiser, which she has participated in many times. It takes them across the country, to TZ and UG. Participants come all the way from the UK. The money they raised 6yrs ago is in an account and Food for life is supported by the interest. However, they have now invested in bonds to boost the interest income. Vishaka is now the manager of the restaurant at the HKT. She wants to expand the FFLP but first needs to expand the kitchen, install solar, improve food quality. Currently the basic food is rice and beans which is approx. 20ksh. per child. She wants to include a vege, fruit and milk.

Finally, the canter carrying buckets of rice and beans took off and we followed in a van with Philip the driver. On radio I heard Philip tell someone “tuna wageni weka watoto vizuri”!! I asked Philip where we were going, he explained two stops, first a school then deeper in a location.

The first stop ‘Love School Centre’. 2yrs to 16yrs, 250 children. Here the older ones help organize and serve the younger ones. We met the principal. We are not staying here, we move to the next stop. But I notice the big street boys calling for food through the school shack window (really intimidating).

Along the way I notice children running along the van. They know the van and canter, so there is a mass exodus towards the meeting/ serving point. We find small nursery school children already in a line chanting 'Hare Krishna'. It reminded me of “baba, karibu… in the Moi days”. The children call the 2 Asian girls ‘muzungu’.

I serve the beans. Every conceivable item that can hold food is presented, buckets, Nakumat plastic bags, etc. For most this is the only meal of the day. Survival dictates. It was common for the children to keep returning in line with a fresh tin (I guess for the rest of the family members). Some even go and pour the food somewhere and return in line to refill. And its impossible to send them away coz you are aware how import that this child gets another portion of food.

God bless the people behind this dedicated service.

Soon the food is almost over, but the line, of now mainly mothers are still there. I hear one of the workers say, its ok they can be served too, coz all the children have eaten. Here, 350 people have been fed.  We get back into the comfort of the van and ride back through the leafy suburbs of Lavington and Riverside Drive. Worlds apart!  Today 600 people have had a meal.

Tomorrow there will another lot in a different slum, and its like that 7 days a week. Thanks to Hare Krishna Temple and its supporters.

Go Green and Lower Your Cholesterol Naturally.......

Our very own the late Wangari Mathaai, made it her life mission to defend and protect nature. For good reason too; nature provides us with all we need to maintain a healthy, vibrant lifestyle. From our sloppy mountains, down into the valleys, our meandering rivers, rich exotic forests, lakes and oceans to the air we breathe. All are natural healers. That said, in today’s modern society, toxins and pollution are found in the food we eat, the water we drink and even the air we breathe.
Body cleansing or detoxification is imperative to maintaining good health. While our bodies have a miraculous and natural ability to expel toxins, years of poor-eating habits, stress, low fiber- high sugar foods and sedentary lifestyles have caused a backlog of pollutant build-up in our system. One of the ways this build-up manifests itself is in our arteries as cholesterol; the leading cause of heart disease. The efficient functioning of vital organs like the colon, liver, and kidneys is impaired resulting in overall poor health and death.

1. To lower your Cholesterol,
·         Adopt a healthy, natural and wholesome diet, full of life giving foods. These would include fresh fruits and vegetables, buy them organic.
·         Reduce overall fat intake, avoid trans-fats and limit saturated fat or “bad fats” found in deep fried foods. Replace these with "good fats" such as olive oil and those found in whole grains, avocado and omega 3 fish.
·         Eliminate sweets and refined foods, few people realize that eating sweets increases triglycerides (bad fats) and cholesterol production.

2. Go green for Physical Activity.
Embrace nature. This can be as easy as taking a walk in the park or walking the dog around the block. At least 30minutes of exercise a day has been shown to reduce total cholesterol and improve "good" HDL cholesterol levels.

3. Drink Aloe Vera Juice:
·         It is a great herb that contains over 200 active ingredients. These include a mixture of natural antibiotics, capillary dilators, immune boosters, body detoxifiers and cleansers, and cell rejuvenators. They are very important properties for enhancing the body’s natural detox engine; treats digestive disorders like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence, heartburn and indigestion. It is great for weight watchers as it raises the body’s metabolism and fat metabolism.
4. Drink Green Tea:
·         For centuries green tea has been used to maintain good health.  It is known to posses the highest number of antioxidants and phytochemicals (plant substancepreventing disease) as well as other important nutrients, vitamins and minerals. It works by increasing fat oxidation and fat metabolism.
5. Use Moringa Leaf Powder:
This is popularly known as ‘Never Die’ due to its enormous health boosting properties. It is the ultimate, natural, energy and endurance health supplement. This makes it the most powerful anti-oxidant of all. “Never Die” is a powerful free radical fighter that helps the body cleanse and detoxify naturally. It is loaded with powerful and vital nutrients that enhance the body’s cleansing properties, helping the body organs (heart, colon, liver, and kidneys) function at their optimal. It also contains Amino Acids which are the building blocks of protein, a key nutrient to a well functioning system. Inevitably, a noticeable change in anyone using Moringa leaf powder is a healthier and younger-looking skin.
6. Drink Water for life.
·        This will help your body eliminate toxins.  A minimum of drink 2 liters of pure water daily is a good start. As we continue to take from nature, let's heed the late Wangari Mathaai’s call to be a humming bird; each one of us in our individual capacity, let's do the best we can, let's plant a tree.

Kate’s Organics Products are found in all our leading stores & health shops country wide.

A farmer has a dog, steak dinner and rabbit on one side of the river. He needs to take them across to the other side. He has a rowboat in which he can only carry one item at a time. Note, he can not leave the dog with the rabbit or steak dinner. So how would he get all the items to the other side without loosing any of them?

ANGEL AND HER LOVER

The lover sleeps and amid his dreams
His angel comes on sunlit beams.
To waken him with kisses sweet,
For her love for him is oh so deep.
She wakes him with her caresses light
Upon his skin and smiles so bright.
And in her eyes, he sees the love
She feels for him neath stars above.
He comes to her to gently place,
Kisses upon her neck and face.
To caress her body and touch her soul.
For together two become a whole.
The love they make is deep and true
And in this embrace their love renew.
When all is done and all's been said,
Upon her breasts he rests his head.
And hears her heart beat for him alone.
A greater love, he's never known.
